We're now blogging at Khadarlis.org. Come join us!

We're moving again!

But this time, it's just our blog, and we would love it if you checked it out.

Khadarlis has blogged her on Blogger for years, and we're kind of sad to see it go. But without getting into too much detail, we've finally figured out how to get the blog up and running on our website.

This way, we don't have to separate our website and blog. They'll be in the same place which makes it easy for you to read about us and browse the site if you want to.

If you still want to stick with us click the link below, and the subscribe to our newsletter for updates.

A lot of things have happened on May 1st.

Great Britain was formed, the Empire State Building opened, and a thousand other events that we won't mention yet. But do you know what else happened?

See what Cintas donated to Khadarlis in 1 Week!

A few weeks ago we wrote a little about the value Cintas brings to school children and workers who need uniforms in our community.

Well, we didn't have pictures to show you the kind work donations Cintas generously trusts Khadarlis to gives to people who really need it.

So this week we've brought you some pictures to go with it (with a little bit of nudging from a few volunteers).

What you're seeing is a pretty good size donation of work jackets, pants and more:

If you have children who may need uniforms next year, or you're a worker who needs a decent work uniform, please contact Khadarlis.

We just might have what you're looking for, and even if we don't we'll do our best to save it for you!

Khadarlis' Community Outreach Center Has some New Rules!

Rules are always in place for a reason, and we at Khadarlis really believe in this.

We have a lot of agreements with or Bed Bath and Beyond, Home Depot and other partners to make sure all of our donations go into the right hands.

But we don't need contracts to tell us that we're here to, "Serve the need not the greedy" as we say in our office.

We've taken some new measures to give us everything we need to enforce our contracts. We have a new policy for our Donation Program, cameras, and even a few signs to tell our clients they need a voucher!

But, we thought it would help to know EXACTLY how many items a client or family could get when they come to Khadarlis:

Take a sneak peak into Khadarlis' Donation center!

Khadarlis is on YouTube!

So what better way to show you the all new way we've organized our donation room than through a video?

This video was shot by a few of Khadarlis' volunteers and a single cell phone! We aren't video experts yet, but we promise to have more content coming soon!

If you like the way we've set up our donation room, it's the product of over 10 hours of work from all of our hard working volunteers!

One last thing!

If you're a Rhode Islander who saw this video and wants to know if you or your family qualifies to receive all of these donation we give away (for free!) talk to your local CAP office or visit our website to learn more about our program!

Which businesses are growing the fastest in the US?

What do you imagine when you hear growth?

Do you think about height? Age? Or something as simple as a house plant. Try focusing on economic growth? How about economic growth?

Yes, you've heard our economy is slowly getting better. But..did you know one kind of business is growing faster than others?

Actually, its growth has been higher for over a decade! So do you think you know what kind of business we're talking about? Take a quick guess before you keep reading!

A Surprising Statistic

A few weeks a go, a surprising statistic came out of the  Urban Institute

The  2001-2011, nonprofits businesses had a 25% growth. This was actually higher than that of for profit businesses. How much higher? Well, for profit businesses only had growth of .5%.

Let's be fair, only about 10% of the workforce was employed by nonprofits in the year 2010. BUT..a majority of those people were tax exempt charities that have a variety of missions. They are serving the needs of many people in the US.

So what's all this growth mean then?

The Real Impact

The New York Times commented on the report, believing this growth has to do with:
  • People are in need of healthcare assistance
  • Greater Demand for Relief
  • Growth of Family Foundations
Simply put, people are in need of assistance whether economic or otherwise. At the same time private foundations have been investing a lot of money to help organizations serve their communities.

All of these things points to what Khadarlis has always tried to do: Serve all the local communities of Rhode Island. We've donated thousands of dollars worth of services to people who need it the most: fire victims and the impoverished.

A lot of Work Ahead

With foundations donating to organizations, and with organizations doing good work, shouldn't a lot of good be happening?

Yes!

A lot of great organizations are doing their part to help people get through difficult times. At the same time, we can't forget that that Rhode Island still has the highest unemployment rate.

We at Khadarlis pledge to give more and grow faster to meet the challenge of helping local families. We'll have a lot of new things happening for the rest of 2014.

It's going to be great!

Spotlight on Khadarlis' Partners: Cintas!

Many people don't know it yet, but we're partnered with Cintas a company specializing in work uniforms and apparel!

And it's thanks to Cintas that we're able to meet a need that many people seem to forget.

Can you guess what it is?

That's alright, we'll tell you anyway: SCHOOL AND WORK UNIFORMS!

There are a lot of schools in Rhode Island, and especially in Providence, that require school uniforms. Unfortunately the cost of buying uniforms for children is pretty high for parents who are struggling. That's our partnership with Cintas comes in.

Because they regularly donate work uniforms, pants, and other clothing we can get them to match school uniform codes. That means children can finally have their own uniforms and parents get to save money for food and bills.

Of course these uniforms are handy for others who need a uniform for their job, too!

Thanks to Cintas, both adults and children have the clothes they need to succeed.

So today we would love to give a special thank you to all of our friends at Cintas who help us serve our community.

If you could, please visit the Cintas website to see more about them!

A Wonderful Letter of Support from Youthbuild Providence

In the nonprofit world, you often find that giving a little bit of help gives you a great partnership in return.

With this in mind, we're excited to announce we've received a warm letter of support from Youthbuild Providence. If you're unfamiliar with Youthbuild, you can read more about their mission here.

Recently they held a Build-a-Bed event, where they sought to create beds, complete with sheets and all, to 100 children below the age of 12 in Providence.

We contributed bed sheets and pillows to do our part in ensuring these children have a bed to call their own.

Michael Deragon, the Service Learning Coordinator at Youthbuild Providence, sent us a kind letter emphasizing that these donations were more than just beds!

Beds, toys and other activities such as healthy sleeping habits and even bedtime stories (our favorite!) are possible because of the work of organizations like Khadarlis.

We look forward to working with Youthbuild Providence again in the future and developing a strong partnership with our Community Outreach Center.

See you next time, readers!

International Women's Day 2014: Who are You thankful for?

This weekend it's time to celebrate the special women in our lives.

And we're not talking about Valentine's Day! This weekend on March 9, its International Women's Day!

If you aren't familiar with IWD that's okay because it isn't an official holiday in the U.S!

It is official in countries in Uganda, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and many other countries. And many other countries have adopted it as an unofficial holiday.

So what do you do on International Woman's Day?

Good question. You should show the most important women in life that you care!

Call your mom! Say hi to a friend! You know what's even better? Saying, "Happy International Women's Day" to a women you encounter on Sunday. It can be a total stranger! The most important thing is that you acknowledge someone!

Since the UN's theme for IWD is "Equality for women is progress for all," this year we would like to say a big Happy IWD to women who...
  • Work every day to hold their families together,
  • Fight for the rights for everyone or in other words.
In short...

Happy IWD to the Women of our Community!

What Khadarlis' Volunteers Have to Say About Us!

Every once in a while, a great volunteer finds an organization they love.

This is one of those times! One of our more dedicated volunteers wrote an awesome letter detailing her experiences so far at Khadarlis.

Read her full letter now:
I volunteered at Khadarlis, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization located in Providence, Rhode Island because my knowledge and skills were welcomed with open arms. My intent was to contribute to an organization that strived to make positive changes in the lives of those in need.
What is great about Khadarlis is that the president, co-president and volunteers are all happy to interact with you directly. These are the same individuals personally partaking in the local programs and traveling internationally reaching out to those in need. This accessibility to all members creates a personal connection between those giving and those receiving from Khadarlis.
On my first day touring the facility, I felt the passion and positivity of the members.  Shortly after, I felt a part of the family. I believe great organizations begin with the attitude that any individual can contribute and I have found this in Khadarlis.
The local program efforts to support children and their families, truly demonstrate the heart of Khadarlis since it originated as an organization working internationally in Sierra Leone. While there is a great need internationally, Khadarlis has not failed to recognize the great need within its own community.
Although I currently no longer live in the vicinity of Khadarlis, I continue to volunteer remotely. I choose to volunteer not only because of my personal connection to the mission but also because of the results this organization has produced.
The results show internationally in the clothing, agricultural tools, school materials, small business starter materials donated, the rebuilding of homes and locally in the programs that have supported the improvement of school children’s grades, underprivileged parents obtaining their GED degree and job search and resume building through their computer resource center.
The effort continues on; I was just recently informed about a new Pen Pal program in which Rhode Island students can form a relationship with a student in Sierra Leone and donate school supplies to their new friends.

Whether an individual seeks to volunteer for the first time or a longtime volunteer seeks to strengthen an organization, Khadarlis is an excellent organization worthy of attention from those with big hearts.
